Coronavirus Prevention

With the spread of the deadly Coronavirus ( COVID-19 ) affecting the lives of so many around the globe, the necessity for the human organism to fight off infections has never been greater. Here, I highlight a Natural-medicine based anti-inflammation protocol which improves the inflammatory response while staving off infections.

COVID-19 is spread when a person sneezes or coughs, spraying droplets through the air. With infection, the virus begins to multiply inside cells lining the respiratory airway. “If the virus replicates very quickly, before your body has a chance to try and prevent it with an immune response, or if the immune response comes in too late, then it can’t control the virus and starts going berserk,” said Anthony Fehr, a virologist at the University of Kansas. Problems can also stack up. When the virus gets deep into the lungs, it can damage alveoli, the air sacs that take in oxygen. As cellular damage accumulates, lung tissue begins to stiffen. The heart must work harder to get limited oxygen to the rest of the organs. Vineet Menachery, a virologist at the University of Texas Medical Branch said “what makes this new virus so damaging is you’re losing lung function, and that puts a strain on every organ in your body.” One thing is clear, in the patients who recover, the immune system has worked: it has cleared the virus, with inflammation receding.

The anti-inflammation protocol which I formulated consists of Ginseng Elixir, Coconut Kefir, and Deer Antler Velvet. Ginseng has been used in traditional herbal medicine for enhanced vitality and immune modulation for a millennium. The active chemical constituent is saponins, also known as ginsenosides. Ginsenosides from Korean Red Ginseng ameliorate lung inflammatory responses. Various ginsenosides regulate the production of pro-inflammatory molecules, such as cyclooxygenase-2, cytokines, and chemokines. They also prevent oxidative and nitrosative stress.

Coconut Kefir is a fermented probiotic used to promote intestinal flora. The health of your gut microbiome has been identified in establishing the link between the lungs and the gut. When the friendly bacteria population is perturbed, this creates an internal environment for yeast proliferation and contributes to systemic inflammation. Coconut Kefir produces anti-inflammatory short chain fatty acids ( SCFAs ), which could protect against inflammation in the lungs.

Deer Antler Velvet ( Cervus elaphus ) has been used as a medicinal herb in the Chinese pharmacopeia for thousands of years. One of its pharmacological effects is stimulation of the immune system. In particular, Antler Velvet has shown to prevent acute lung injury and inhibit inflammation. It decreases capillary-alveolar permeability, changing in lung protein leaks, and the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the lungs.

Just earlier today, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued an alert warning Americans of the impending peril. Dr. Nancy Messonnier told reporters “It’s not so much of a question of if this will happen in this country anymore but a question of when this will happen.” Allopathic medicine is a wonderful and powerful tool once a disease has been contracted. But preventative care belongs to the domain of  Natural medicine. To this end, its application to ward off the Coronavirus cannot be overstated.
